RunnerDuck Raised Bed Project

STEP 11
STABILIZE THE MOUNTAIN

Our "mountain" is about six feet high and quite steep on the waterfall side of it. Remember the back and one side of it is held in place by retaining walls. We are going to put lots of plants on our mountain but until they get established we were afraid that the winter rains in Seattle might wash it down.
To help prevent erosion from happening we placed large rocks at different places. We staggered them and tried to make it look natural. These rocks would become part of the landscape while holding the dirt. This has given us both the stability and appearance we were looking for.
After the rocks were in place we covered the mountain with "beauty bark". This is chipped up tree bark we use to help keep weeds down and give a nice appearance. In different parts of the country I know that different materials are used such as long pine needles. Use whatever is available and best suits your area.
