Do It Yourself Bio Filter
Last week we completed the tank. This week we are going to make the Jenny Box.
I don't know where the name "Jenny Box" came from but that's a little filter box that the water pump goes in. It works as a pre-filter for the pump and bio filter. We made the PVC pipe from the pump to the outside of the box out of 3/4" material. The actual box that we use is a small 12" X 18" X 6" Rubbermaid tote with a lid. You can get them in different colors so choose one that blends best with your pond.
We drilled eight 2 1/2" holes into the lid for water flow.
Holes in Lid

Drill a hole for the PVC pipe to go through the side of the box. The hole should line up with the outlet of the pump. This should be a close fit but does not need to be sealed.

The fittings we used were:
Threaded female fitting, to fit the pump outlet, to 3/4" PVC pipe.
3/4" PVC pipe, enough to get outside of the box.
3/4" PVC pipe to 1/2" male pipe thread if you are going to add a valve or 3/4" PVC pipe to a garden hose male thread.
We used a "T" to divert some of the water to our waterwheel. If you have another small water feature you can divert some of the water this way but don't slow down your main flow too much.

Pump assembly

Assemble the fittings as shown below.
Pump Installed in Box

Cut a piece of filter material to fit the top of the box. We used three pieces of wire to tie it onto the plastic lid. We just ran the pump power cable over the side of the box rather than through a hole. That way you can easily remove the lid for cleaning the filter.
Now hook up a piece of garden hose between your pump and pond filter and you'll be good to go. We were amazed at how quickly our pond started to clear up. It will be a while before all the algae is whittled down but it's a great start.
