What's New This Week? Marilyn has really gained on the boat cover. We know this saga has gone on for a long time but it has not been an easy task. The bridge cover is done and here's a picture of that effort. Now if we can just get the cockpit cover done before the rain and winds of winter show up. The boat is moored at Sandy Point which is northwest of Bellingham, Washington in the northern part of the state. In the winter we get some very high winds, around 60 - 80 MPH that come in from the Pacific Ocean through the Straights of Juan DeFuca or down from the northeast. With the prediction of an El Nino this year we're hoping that it will be a milder winter. We also bagged camping for the rest of the year, literally. We took our fifth wheel from Sandy Point and parked it at our place in Port Susan, just west of Marysville, Washington, for the winter. We covered it with the nice Adco cover we got for it last year and added antifreeze to the water system. It should be ready to shed off the Washington rains of winter. DigiTalkThe solution is to reduce the size of your picture. Not only in the overall size but in the number of pixels. Most computers today come with software that will allow you to resize your pictures. If you don't have picture editing software then you can download one of many free ones. One really good one is Irfanview. When I'm going to send a picture I reduce it down to about 420 pixels wide and reduce the quality by about 30%. This makes for a nice size file that can be easily downloaded by any computer. Here's one more helpful hint. Once you reduce your picture save it with a different file name than the original. For the small pictures in this newsletter I save them as "picturename_thmb.jpg". This way I keep my original file, "picturename.jpg", at full size in case I want to print the picture out large or crop to some feature later on. Don't be intimidated by this. The software is relatively simple to use and comes with good instructions. SITE OF THE WEEK
Can you imagine what it must have been like traveling up a river on a big old steamboat or paddle wheeler around the turn of the century? We always see them in the old movies and they look grand. Ken got to go on the paddle wheeler on Lake Tahoe once and really enjoyed it although it's probably nothing like the really cool old ones.
This week we found a web site that will take you back to those days with not only stories and pictures but sounds as well. www.steamboats.org has put together a huge web site on the history of steamboats and paddle wheelers.
We thought it was especially fun to listen to the old steam Calliope music played on the steam pianos of the Delta Queen, Belle of Louisville and many others.
Put on the reading glasses, turn up your speakers and go to Steamboats.org. We think you'll have a blast! Did we mention that they have steam horn sounds from many of the old ships?
MARILYN'S CORNERMummy Kit
This is a really cute gift or party favor for your Halloween party.
Here's what you'll need:
Glue google eyes on the gauze. Add a safety pin for the mouth. Put the gauze in a plastic bag. Cut a piece of craft paper to fit across the top of the plastic bad. Write "Mummy Kit" on the paper. Fold the top of the bag over and staple it shut with the name tag at the top. That's it, now make a bunch of them for your party! We hope you enjoy Marilyn's Corner and look forward to all the fun things she brings you each week. It's getting to be the time of year that people are thinking about putting studded snow tires on their cars. Those tires are great on snow and ice but they play hell with the bare roads. Don't put studded snow tires on your car or truck until it's really necessary. This will help conserve our roads for another year.
If you have a conservation tip please send it to conservation@runnerduck.com and we'll post it in our newsletter.
