WELCOME BACK: After all the hard work on our dock and ramp it was good to take a weekend off, well sort of. First though we'd like to mention that the last time we were up at Sandy Point Ken's sister Diane and husband Del showed up.
They took a Labor Day vacation from the Bay area to the Great Northwest. Along with them were Ken's daughter and family which included the two grand kids. While we didn't get to spend a lot of time with them it was good to see them. Even though Ken and his sister are only about 700 miles apart we don't get to see each other very often. As far as last weekend went, we got to celebrate our grandson's third birthday. It's so hard to believe that Camden is already three years old. For those long time readers of the RunnerDuck will remember when he was born and I'm sure it doesn't seem that long ago for you either. He's getting to be quite the big boy and of course has the energy of a football team. We decided that since we were home for the weekend it would be a good time to clean out our pond. It had been a couple of years and really needed it. We had no idea how difficult of a project that would be. First we had to catch all the fish. As you would walk around the pond it would stir up the silt and make it impossible to see them. We pumped the water down to make it easier but still was a real challenge. After we didn't see any more fish we pumped the pond dry and then took a wet/dry vacuum to it. This worked really well at getting the dirt, sand and fish poop off the bottom. Next we needed to rearrange the rocks along the sides of the pond for they had slowly slid down exposing the bladder and reducing the area for the fish. When Marilyn went to move a rock she saw something shinny. Yep it was a fish that was hiding and high and dry. She grabbed it, passed it to me and I threw it into the holding tank. It swam away and appeared to be OK. Marilyn yelled the she had another so I came running a transported that on to the tank also. When I turned around she had another three, then another, a couple more and so on until she recovered over ten more fish. We don't know how long they had been out of water but every one of them swam away. In all we appear to have 34 fish, all healthy and happy. After the cleaning we put down a layer of pea gravel and then filled the pond up with fresh water. We added a chlorine killer so that we could add the fish sooner than waiting a couple of days. While the temporary tank we put the fish in was pretty good size 34 fish can suck up a lot of oxygen in a short amount of time. We put the fish back in the pond late in the afternoon and they are now settled back in their home and looking good. We still need to get our plants back in so that the fish can better hide from the raccoons. We are currently in discussions with several crafters to sell their art pieces on our web site. Stay tuned for further updates as we finalize things. If you are a crafter who would like to sell their creations through our web site please drop us a line and we'll see what we can do. We currently only have one persons crafts on display, Ron Godin, but would love to add more. Check it out at www.runnerduck.com/craft.htm. What's New This Week? We all took a moment to stop and reflect on the second anniversary of September 11th. It's still so hard to believe that all those poor souls were lost in such a senseless act. While we hate to see our fine American solders over seas fighting against this terrible enemy we must keep the reflection of September 11th ever present.
We may not like a lot of things that our Government is doing but some of the alternatives aren't much better. Peace to the families and friends of all those who lost their lives both in the attacks here and over seas.
Now that we have our boat up at Sandy Point and the dock is done it's time to start working on the boat. We have an overheating problem in the port engine that we hope to resolve this weekend. Hopefully we'll have some great news for you next week on how successful we were at getting things fixed. We should just about have everything done and in ship shape by the time the weather turns so crappy we can't go out! DigiTalkThere are a number of places where you can get an email address for free. Hotmail is one that a lot of people use. The only requirement that they have is that you check your email every so often or they will close down your account. We found another site that has free email addresses that expire in a really short time. Were talking hours to a few days. If you really don't want any email even in your junk account then this might be for you. You can check them out at http://jetable.org/. Enter your email address and select the time you want your new email to run. This site is French so jour is "days". Create your bogus address and limit your exposure. SITE OF THE WEEK
While we are on the subject of junk mail and spam we thought we'd tell you about a free program that we've downloaded and are running. POPFile is basically a spam email filter that gets smarter with time. The installation is a little challenging but the instructions are pretty complete and in relatively plain English. We'd recommend reading all the installation instructions first before actually trying to install the program. It might
even be a good idea to print them so they are easy to refer to. MARILYN'S CORNERHarvest Bread Loaf
We almost hate to mention it but Fall is not far away but with it brings lots of pretty colors and fun holidays. This project will add to that Fall atmosphere as a great room decoration or a pretty addition to your table. Just don't let your guests try to eat it ;-)
Frozen Rhodes Dough or other bread dough.
Cut out the wooden bread board using this pattern. Click on picture for full pattern. Sand the edges smooth, stain and shellac. Bake a real mini loaf of bread. After the bread loaf is cool, microwave it for three minutes. Cool and microwave another three minutes. This will dry out the inside and kill any remaining yeast. Tie Raffia around the bread loaf. Place two wheat stems under the loaf and glue to the board. That's it! Now see at how nice it looks? Everyone will enjoy this and ask where you got it. You can then proudly announce that "I made it, thanks to the help of the RunnerDuck Review". Yes we're always looking for a plug! We hope you enjoy Marilyn's Corner and look forward to all the fun things she brings you each week. If you have a fun project that would be suitable for our newsletter we'd love to share it with our readers. Just contact marilyn@runnerduck.com and we'll do the rest.
