RunnerDuck Home

WELCOME BACK: Ken had a nice quiet birthday last Monday and that's just the way he likes it. Thank you for all the birthday wishes they were very appreciated. The new animation software he got will keep him busy for a long time to come.

We're running a little behind this week because we just installed an upgrade to Windows XP. Like all software, it seems, it took a couple of times to get it right. The first attempt wrote XP to the F: drive instead of overwriting 2000 on the C: drive. One of the things in the instructions for XP is that if you upgrade from 2000 or NT you cannot uninstall XP, weird. Anyhow after 50 minutes on the phone with a Microsoft tech 2000 was gone and XP was installed on drive C: where it should be. So far everything seems to be working OK but we'll keep you informed as we get more into it.

Another reason we're behind this week is because of Ken's new animation software he got for his birthday. If you've ever played with animation software time can just disappear. We stumbled onto a great deal that we are able to share with you. Our friends at Crazy Ivan's, the makers of Boomer and Flash Image Builder, have put together a deal where you can get Carrara Studio ($400) and Amapi ($400) both for $145 dollars. They are letting us share this special with you but there are only a limited number of copies so if you are in the market for animation software here's your chance. Just go to this Special Link and you can order both Carrara and Amapi (an $800 value) for only $149. Crazy Ivan will even throw in a copy of Boomer, another cool tool for making Flash movies from your rendered animations, for an additional $20, great deal! Check out Crazy Ivan's other neat software while you are there. We'll be doing a review of this software next week.

We absolutely love Washington State! The mountains, the lakes, Puget Sound, the deserts in eastern Washington, the traffic... Wait a second, NOT the traffic. Things are really out of control in the traffic department. Last Saturday we went up to Whidbey Island to see Marilyn's sister's new house. Now you'd think that Saturday morning would be a pretty good time to travel, wrong! On I-5 the traffic was stop and go through Everett and then when we got to the Whidbey Island turn off traffic was backed up onto the freeway for 1/2 a mile. It's just not a lot of fun getting around here any more. If you are planning to visit our wonderful state don't be put off because there really is a lot of great stuff to see and do. During the weekdays it's not too bad getting around between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. We suggest bringing enough clothes and money to last the time you are here and then GO HOME. It's not that we are rude just full!

Be sure to check out Ron Godin's art in the RunnerDuck Craft Store. His rustic Adirondack art is really something to see. Just go to www.runnerduck.com/crafts.htm and see what we have for you.

What's New This Week? The fair season is upon us. If you haven't been to a state or county fair lately this might be a good time to start thinking about it. Most states have one or two huge fairs that everyone talks about. Here in Washington the Western Washington Fair in Puyallup is one of the largest fairs in the United States. While these big fairs usually have more rides and more barkers selling their wares we'd like to suggest you search out some of the smaller fairs in your area. They have a much more personal feel and are generally less crowded. Many of them have fun events that you just don't or can't see at the larger fairs. To help you find some of these smaller fairs just type "fair+washington" (your state) into Google or your favorite web browser. You may have to do some looking but there are usually a bunch of them there.

DigiTalk

Well I bit the bullet and installed Windows XP on my main machine. If you've been thinking about upgrading to XP maybe some of my problems will help you around some of yours.
The first thing I did was tried to do a clean install over my Windows 2000. I had been having some problems with 2000 and didn't want to carry any bad baggage into XP. It sounded pretty straight forward but apparently I hit a wrong button along the way and it wrote XP to my F: drive and left 2000 on C:. I then had a dual boot system, which is not what I wanted. In reading the booklet that came with XP it said that if you are upgrading from 2000 or NT you will not be able to uninstall XP. Oh boy now what do I do? Call Microsoft of course.
I got a very nice tech on the phone and about fifty minutes later we had a clean install of XP on my C: drive. Now all that remained was installing all the rest of my software, downloading drivers for my hardware and patches for my software. Don't let this scare you because it was all quite easy. The only really disappointing thing was that Adaptec did not have a patch or free upgrade for CD Creator and that cost around $100 for the upgrade.
If you are thinking about upgrading to XP I'd say go for it. They have done a really nice job of making the install very painless. If you do have problems their tech support seems to be very responsive, at least mine was.

SITE OF THE WEEK

There is still a lot of time to go camping this summer and if you have a travel trailer or motor home you are not alone. We've seen a lot of different and interesting travel rigs but this site has some really special campers. Have you ever seen anything like this?

These "Tin Can Tourists" look like they have a lot of fun along with some very interesting rigs. I wish I knew who the manufacturer of this 5th wheel camper was but I don't see anything on their site. We hope you enjoy this site and all their interesting stuff as much as we did. There are a lot of links to follow from this site that have even more interesting campers.
Just log onto www.tincantourists.com and enjoy.

KIDS CORNER

Ladybug Refrigerator Magnet

If you remember last week we made a tall ship out of walnut shells. If you were successful at cracking open all the shells you should have one half shell left over since we used seven halves for our ship. Not wanting to throw anything away how about a Ladybug Refrigerator Magnet?
CAUTION: Hot melt glue can burn you so you should get the help of an adult with the hot melt gluing so you don't burn yourself.

Here's what you'll need:
1/2 Walnut shell
A cotton ball
A piece of card stock or heavy paper
Hot melt glue
1/2" wide magnetic strip
Red paint
Black felt
Goggle eyes
If you don't have 1/2 a walnut shell carefully crack open a walnut so that you have a perfect half.
Clean out and eat the walnuts.
Paint the shell red. It may take a couple of coats to get it good and red.
Put the shell down on the card stock and trace around it, then cut out the pattern.
Glue a cotton ball inside the shell and glue the card stock to the bottom of the shell and the cotton ball. The cotton ball gives the card stock a little something more to stick to.
Cut out some small black felt dots and glue them onto the shell.
Cut out a half circle of black felt for the face.
You can either glue the goggle eyes onto the black felt or cut out small white felt circles for the eyes. Add a couple of really small black dots to finish the eyes.
Cut the magnetic strip to about 1/2 inch square and glue it in the center of the back of the ladybug.

There you have it a really neat ladybug for your refrigerator. Now go add it to all the other neat stuff attached to your refrigerator.

We really hope you enjoy our kid's projects. Marilyn puts forth a lot of effort each week to bring you these great ideas. She could really use your help with ideas for future newsletters. Joke of the Week

I went to the store the other day, I was only in there for about 5 minutes and when I came out there was a motorcycle cop writing a parking ticket.
I went up to him and said, 'Come on buddy, how about giving a guy a break?'
He ignored me and continued writing the ticket.
So I called him a pencil necked Nazi.
He glared at me and started writing another ticket for having bald tires!!
So I called him a horses ass.
He finished the second ticket and put it on the car with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket!!
This went on for about 20 minutes, the more I abused him, the more tickets he wrote.
This obviously wasn't going anywhere so I went back to my car, which was parked around the corner...

   THIS WEEKS FREE RECIPE
Sweet, Sexy, Sandy's, Super Sophisticated, Saucy, Sausage, Savory, Succulent, Lip-smacking, Stupendous, Seafair, Saturday, Secret, Scrambled Egg and Mushroom Surprise Brunch Casserole
Back in May we had a Scrambled Egg Casserole recipe but here's Sandy's twist on it. She made this for the recent girls camp out up at Port Susan. They obviously didn't have enough to do to come up with a name like that!

  • 1 Can Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • 3 Tablespoons Dry Sherry
  • 1 1/2 Cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese, shredded
  • 1 1/2 Cups Jack Cheese, shredded
  • 18 Eggs
  • 2 Tablespoons Milk

  • 1 teaspoon Parsley Flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dry Dill Weed
  • Pepper
  • 1/4 Cup Butter
  • 1/2 Cup Sliced Onions
  • 1/4 Cup Sliced Mushrooms
  • Your favorite breakfast meat, sausage, bacon, hamburger, etc.

Heat up the Mushroom Soup and Sherry.
Mix the Cheeses in a separate bowl.
In another bowl, beat the Eggs, Parsley, Dill, Pepper and Milk
Saute the Onions in the Butter and add the Mushrooms. Heat on medium.
Add the meat and cook until the meat is browned.
Pour the Eggs over the meat and cook. Lift the edges of the eggs as they cook to allow uncooked eggs to flow under.
After the eggs are cooked put half of them into a medium baking dish.
Cover them using half the Mushroom Soup and then half of the Cheese mix.
Add the rest of the eggs and then the rest of the soup and cheese.
Sprinkle Paprika on top.
You can either bake at this time or refrigerate for later.
Just before serving bake at 300 degrees F for 30 to 35 minutes or approximately 1 hour if cold.
Serves 8 - 10

Thanks Sandy I know this is great!

PROJECTS

Yard Tool Carrier

It seems like there is always something you need to haul with you around the yard when you are doing gardening. Here's a handy little carrier for just that purpose. Ours is a little small but you can make it any size you like using these easy instructions as a basic plan.

Here's what you'll need:

  • 3/4" X 6" X 25" Cedar. Fencing scraps work great.
  • 1" X 6" X 24" Cedar
  • 1/2" Dowel 5" long
  • Glue
  • Nails
Cut the following pieces:

Sides (2) 12" X 5 1/2" with a 30 degree taper on each end.
Handles Sides 1 3/4" X 10"
Handle 1/2" Dowel 5" long.
Slats (21) 3/8" thick 6" long, cut out of 1" X 6"

Glue and nail the slats to the sides evenly spaced.
Drill a 1/2" diameter hole centered 1/2" down from the top of each handle side.
Put the dowel through the two handle sides.
Glue and nail the handle sides centered on the inside of the box.
Decorate your box or leave it just plane, after all it is a working carrier. To make it look a little nicer like for a gift you can paint it or like we did glue empty seed packages to it.

Now get out there and play in the dirt!

CONSERVATION TIP

As summer starts to wind down in some parts of the country there is not as much need to be watering your plants. As part of their natural evolution they need less and less water as fall approaches. Unless it's really hot and dry we would suggest cutting back your general watering by about half. If you have plants like tomatoes that are still producing you can continue to water them but ornamentals can be reduced.

If you have a conservation tip please send it to conservation@runnerduck.com and we'll post it in our newsletter.
