RunnerDuck Home

WELCOME BACK:   Happy 4th of July holiday weekend and welcome to July 2004. Hard to believe that June is gone and July is already under way. It may just be because we're getting older but the months sure do seem to be flying by. Our friend Charles K. sent us this really neat site to help you celebrate your 4th, www.njagyouth.org/liberty.htm

We don't know about where you live but here in Western Washington the weather is always a topic of conversation, especially coming into a holiday weekend. Washington has historically been known for it's rain but we do have a lot of nice weather. The one exception to that is a holiday weekend. You can almost count on the weather messing up your plans. What's really crazy is the weather prognosticators don't have a good idea of what's going to happen so you can plan ahead. They show ten days ahead on the weather forecast but can't seem to nail down a couple of days ahead.

On Tuesday this week they said that we were going to have showers on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Wednesday they said no rain but scattered clouds. I guess we'll just have to take what we get but it sure would be nice to pack for the weather instead of having to take everything from shorts to rain gear on your holiday weekend.

However the weather turns out we hope that you have a grand time and don't blow anything up of importance. Fireworks are a lot of fun when properly controlled but in the wrong and immature hands they can make for a quick trip to the hospital or a visit by the fire department. Just keep it safe and sane and you'll have a great time.

We are going to go to Port Susan this weekend to get our 5th wheel trailer and bring it home. This is in preparation for a vacation later on this month. Ken's been telling you about the rearview video system he's been building and this will be the first test. Once all the bugs are worked out we'll tell you what we did in case you are interested in building one.

Our hand crafted, hard maple, kitchen utensils and cutting boards are not only great in the kitchen but they look wonderful on the table. They add a richness to your serving tools that your guests will take note of. Check out the complete line of cutting boards and utensils.

DigiTalk

Over the past few weeks I've been telling you about the computer upgrade I've been doing in order to edit video. During the upgrade I discovered something I didn't know and think you should know about.

After I installed my new motherboard Windows XP would not load. I tried a bunch of different things and finally decided to boot from the Windows disk and perform a repair. When you boot from the Windows XP CD you have an option of doing a fresh install or a repair. Since I didn't want to mess things up too much I opted of the repair. IT WORKED! I was excited to say the least. At least I was excited until I noticed that things just weren't right. Some of my peripherals seemed to be affecting the way things ran. After a lot of fiddling around I went to the Microsoft web site and had it check my system for any updates that might be required. Sure enough service pack SP1 was not installed as well as some of the security patches. I proceeded to spend the next few hours installing everything and now all is well.

All this to say, if you ever have to run "repair" from you Windows CD be sure to go out and get all the updates from the Microsoft web site. It pretty much acts like a new install, which is something I never knew. Like I always say, live and learn!

SITE OF THE WEEK

If you've been following along I've been building a new computer to do video editing. I told you that I would fill you in on the different challenges I have as I go along. Well with summer here and lots of videos being taken you may not want to wait for me so we've found a site that has a ton of information on getting into video.

They sell most everything they talk about and their prices don't look too bad. The important thing is that they have a lot of great information. If you are anxious to get started creating your next masterpiece go to www.videoguys.com/started.html the VideoGuys web site and start reading. Who knows you might just be the next Spielberg!

MARILYN'S CORNER

Outdoor Candles

Summer is a time for outdoor parties and a great way to dress them up is with these Outdoor Candles. They are pretty and give off just enough light to create a perfect mood.

Here's what you'll need:

Any size jar, mayo, peanut butter, pickles...
Colorful tissue paper.
Decoupage medium.
Ribbons or decorative edging.
Candles.

Clean the jar really good to get all the sticky label glue off.
Cut the tissue paper so that there is about 1/4" overlap when wrapped around the jar. Make it long enough to cover from the bottom of the threads to around the bottom about 1/2".
Apply decoupage medium to the jar.
Apply the paper to the jar while the decoupage is wet. Try to keep the wrinkles to a minimum.
Paint the overlap area of the paper to glue it down.
Paint the entire outside of the paper.
Glue trim onto the top edge of the jar around the outside.
Put a candle inside the jar and you are ready to go. You can use a votive candle or put some sand in the bottom of the jar and put a taller skinny candle in.

Have a ball and make a bunch of them. Your party guests will be dazzled!

We hope you enjoy Marilyn's Corner and look forward to all the fun things she brings you each week. If you have a fun project that would be suitable for our newsletter we'd love to share it with our readers. Just contact marilyn@runnerduck.com and we'll do the rest.

Album Pick of the Week

"Summer"
George Winston

With all that summer has to bring music is one of the best. Music can set that special mood, especially on those hot summer nights. I want to quote two people who like this CD. Gary Selikow from Johannesburg, South Africa wrote, This is a remarkable slice of tranquillity on a CD. It brings to life the wonders of nature during Summer through the genius of George Winston and his associates. I find it extremely soothing and sustaining, from the dreamlike opening piece by Peter Seeger 'Living In The Country' to the exquisite 'Loreta and Desiree's Bouquet'. From 'Spring Creek' by Phillip Aaberg - evocative of a waterfall and stream, to the lively 'Corrina , Corrina'. This album is powerful collage of inspirational meditation music.

Marc from Eagle, Idaho describes it even better. This CD is summer-time cool. Cool like an ice cream cone slowly drippin' hazy licking vanilla. This is cool like the other side of the pillow as a summer time night breeze blows through the window. This is dandelion seed floating through thick air of rising heat cool. This is George Winston within his element creating auditory pictures from the core of the seasons cool. This CD is a baby sleeping in the crib, mobile slowly turning cranking out lullaby cool. This is eyes closed clouds floating shifting across the sky under the shade of a sycamore cool. This CD is summer-time cool.

CONSERVATION TIP

Water, particularly in the western states, is going to become less available as the summer wears on. I still drive down the street and see people watering their yards with a fine mist sprinkler in the middle of a hot afternoon. Depending on the sprinkler and conditions about 20% of the water will evaporate into the air. To prevent this get a sprinkler that doesn't mist so much but has more of a stream of water. Once you've got that water your lawn but only early in the morning or late in the evening. Evening is best because it gives the water time to soak into the ground a little and the plants a chance to drink a few gulps.

You also only need to water good a couple of times a week. Give the lawn a good soaking and then let it go for a few days. Your lawn will be happier and so will your fellow water users.

If you have a conservation tip please send it to conservation@runnerduck.com and we'll post it in our newsletter.

COOKBOOK
SUGGESTION OF THE WEEK

"Summertime Treats: Recipes and Crafts for the Whole Family"
by Sara Perry and Jonelle Weaver

(CLICK)
This is both a cookbook and a craft book that we think you will have lots of fun with. There are many fun things for the kids and great food ideas. A reader from Minneapolis, Minnesota wrote, Many fun ideas for crafts that don't require Martha Stewart skills. I made the cookie cutter soaps with my girlfriend's and had a great time. I plan on making the vacation place mat this summer on vacation. The food also looks great. The picture of the black bean and salsa salad made my mouth water in the store. I will be making that soon. Also appreciate the adult versions of thirst quenching recipes. Instructions and ideas are basic and that's just what I need.

PROJECTS

Wood Pusher

This is a picture of the wood pusher
on top of a piece of wood.

This is one of those "must haves" for working in your shop. It's a pusher to help hold the wood solid while you are running it through your table saw or router. It's also good for safety because it helps keep your fingers away from the cutting area. They are so easy to make I'd suggest making several different sizes.

Here's what you'll need:

4" X 10 1/2" X 1/2" fir or other good wood
9" 2" X 4"
(4) #6 X 1 1/2" deck screws
80 grit sandpaper
Glue

Cut your base 4" X 10 1/2" or any size that suites you.
Cut a 2" X 4" 9" long or to fit your base.
Draw out a pattern on the center of the 2" X 4", 5" X 2 1/2". This will leave a handle 1" thick and 5" long.
Cut out the center of the 2" X 4" on a band saw or saber saw.

Round the edges of the top side of the bottom with a 5/16" roundover bit.
Round the edges of the handle with a 1/2" roundover bit. Route the inside and outside of the handle but not the ends.
Center the handle on the base and lay out the holes for four screws about 1" apart on each end.
Pre drill and countersink the holes in the bottom.
Align and mark the holes on the bottom of the handle. Pre drill these holes.
Glue and screw the bottom to the handle making sure that the screws are below the surface.

Cut a piece of 80 grit sandpaper to fit the bottom. Glue and clamp it to the bottom and let the glue dry thoroughly before using.

That's it! Now make several sizes and then saw up a storm.

We hope you liked this project. If you build it and your friends ask where you got such a clever idea, please tell them that you got it at RunnerDuck.com.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

This week's humor comes to us from Frank M.

A Husband Wal Mart Shopping Center has opened in Atlanta, where a woman can go to choose from among many men to be her husband.

It is laid out in five floors, with the men increasing in positive attributes as you ascend. There is, however, a catch. You're only allowed in once. Once you open the door to any floor, you must choose a man from that floor. If you go up a floor, you can't go back down except to exit the building. So, a woman goes to the shopping center to find a husband.

On the first floor the sign on the door says:
Floor 1: These men have jobs and love kids.

The woman reads the sign. "Well, that's better than not having jobs, or not loving kids, but I wonder what's further up?" So up she goes.

The second floor sign says:
Floor 2: These men have high-paying jobs, love kids and are extremely good-looking.

"Hmmm, better," says the woman. "But I wonder what's further up?"

The third floor sign reads:
Floor 3: These men have high-paying jobs, love kids, are extremely good-looking and help with the housework.

"Wow," says the woman, "very tempting. BUT, there's more further up!" And so again, she goes up.

On the fourth floor the sign reads:
Floor 4: These men have high-paying jobs, love kids, are extremely good-looking, help with the housework and have a strong romantic streak.

"Oh, mercy me." (That's how women talk in Georgia) "But just think... what must be awaiting me further up?" So up to the fifth floor she goes.

The sign on that door says:
Floor 5: This floor is just to prove that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping Wal Mart.
