What's New This Week? Ken's brother Ron, www.blabberon.com, is in town from Northern California and of course he first thing we did was put him to work. As many of you know we have a heavily landscaped back yard with a waterfall, river, fish pond and waterwheel. To keep the fish pond clean we built a bio-filter about three years ago, www.runnerduck.com/pf1.htm. It's worked great at keeping everything sparkling clean until recently. Over the past few months we've noticed a significant decrease in the clarity of our water. We took a look inside the bio-filter and sure enough things did not look good. We set up a line where Ron would dig out the filter pieces, Marilyn would hand them to Ken and he would rinse them off. The filters pieces were really impacted with nasty slimy gunk (how's that for a description?). This is a little gross but we saw a bunch of worm like critters embedded in the filter material. They didn't like being in the air very well and a large number of them crawled out before we put them back in. After they were all rinsed and the tank cleaned we put everything back together, started the pump and waited for things to clear up. Sure enough in about four days the pond is sparkling clear again. If you have a pond we'd recommend adding a bio filter to keep things looking good. We have designed a pretty good on and have all the instructions on our web site as listed above. Thanks to Ron for spending part of his vacation helping with such a mess. Next time we won't let it go so long! DigiTalkSo by now you are probably wondering who the heck is Tim Berners-Lee? He's the guy that invented the Internet! Contrary to popular belief it was not created by Al Gore :-) Tim had worked on it as a means of sharing information between different kinds of computers running different kinds of software. He came up with HTML, Hyper Text Markup Language, the code that makes the internet work. Way to go Tim the world owes you a debt of gratitude for coming up with one of the greatest inventions of all times. SITE OF THE WEEK
Do you like different fonts? I really like all the different fonts that you can use to make you documents look special. We found a site that has sort of a unique set of founts for you to use. You can download and use them for free but the person that came up with these fonts asks for a donation if you use them, especially for business.
With all the fancy, crisp, clean fonts that you can download these are totally different because they are old typewriter fonts. They look like you typed your document with mom's old Remington. They have created a large number of different typewriter fonts based on actual typewriters.
Just go to www.free-typewriter-fonts.com, click on a category, click the down arrow beside the scroll box and select a font. It will display in a box showing you exactly what the font will look like. Select Download and save it to your desktop or a folder. Unzip it to the Windows/Font folder and you're good to go.
MARILYN'S CORNERBird Feeder Revisited
A couple of years ago we showed you how to make a really neat bird feeder from a plastic mayonnaise bottle and pop bottle, www.runnerduck.com/plastic_bird_feeder.htm. They work great and we've been feeding our birds with ours for a long time. Just recently the squirrels have discovered it as a great food source. We didn't mind so much until they decided that making the hole bigger would net them more food.
What we found that worked pretty good was metal caterpillar grommets. They are not really easy to come by but they sure do work great. Ken brought home some samples that he got at work from Spring-Fast, www.devicetec.com. We used their "T" Series, T1. If you have a business or work at a business you can probably get a sample kit from them just for the asking. There are other caterpillar grommets on the market that you could check by checking in your web browser.
There may be other material out there that can do a similar job but these worked pretty good.
We hope you enjoy Marilyn's Corner and look forward to all the fun things she brings you each week. Did you know that your computer and monitor are green? Well they aren't physically colored green but more than likely they are energy green. Every computer shipped today has the ability to go into sleep mode after some period of time. You can set it to put the monitor into sleep mode or both the monitor and computer. A recent study was done and if all the computers in the United States went to sleep after a period of not being used we'd save enough energy to light the entire city of Chicago for one year. Now there is some serious conservation! Check with your computer manufacturer or the help files on your computer to see how to do this on your specific machine, good night :-)
If you have a conservation tip please send it to conservation@runnerduck.com and we'll post it in our newsletter.
Another musician joke from our friend Jeff F. in Texas.
Ronald Reagan arrived at the Pearly Gates this week, and was met by St. Peter. Reagan was stunned for a moment. "You mean, I---I'm in?" he asked. "That's right" said St. Peter. "Come on, man. I'll show you around."
He tossed the keys to a brand new Lincoln Town Car at Reagan, and said, "You drive. This is your car, for the rest of eternity." Reagan was buoyant as they drove along the streets of Heaven, through sunny neighborhoods. Finally they came to a fancy part of town, with big lawns and swimming pools. St. Peter told Reagan that this is where he would be living.
"That's Franklin Roosevelt's house over there," St. Peter pointed out as they drove, "And that's where Albert Einstein lives, next to Madame Curie. Pope John Paul XXIII lives here....and here's your house." They pulled into the driveway, and got out.
As Reagan was looking around, he noticed up in the hills a palace made of shimmering, white granite. He could see it was enormous, with room after room, and terraces with dozens of gold fountains.
"That must be where the Lord lives," said Reagan.
St. Peter shook his head. "No, that's Ray Charles' place," he said.
Reagan's smile faltered for a moment. "Ray Charles lives there? How come all the presidents, scientists and popes live here, and Ray Charles lives up in that palace? I don't get it."
St. Peter chuckled. "Ronnie," he said, "Presidents and Popes are a dime a dozen. But baby, there's only one Ray Charles."
No disrespect to our late presidents but...

Yard Ducks
Here's what you'll need;
11" Peeler Core. These are called different things like Cheery Tone Ties but they are like a 4" X 6" piece that is rounded on the two sides. They are mostly used for landscaping.
2" X 6" X 6".
Google eyes.
Gorilla glue.
Cut the peeler core 11" long with a 45 degree cut on the back end and a 30 degree cut on the front end.
That's all there is to it. Now get out there and make a bunch of them!
We hope you liked this project. If you build it and your friends ask where you got such a clever idea, please tell them that you got it at RunnerDuck.com.
