RunnerDuck Home

WELCOME BACK:   Happy Valentines Day. A lot of you won't get this week's edition until the weekend but happy Valentines Day any way. We hope you and your sweetie had a great day.

It's not often that we pick a theme for our whole newsletter but we thought that there were a few happenings this month that sort of brought it all together. February is National Children's Dental Health Month. It is also George Washington's birthday and President's Day. It seems like you'd have a hard time tying them together but as you read this week's newsletter we hope it all makes sense.

Thanks to those of you who voted for our newsletter at Cumuli Ezine Finder. The numbers went up pretty good and we really appreciate it. If you didn't get a chance to vote, please take a few seconds and go to www.cumuli.com and give us a vote. Thank you very much it's greatly appreciated.
Along with the votes we got some very nice letters from our readers. It really thrills us to hear from you and share your different stories. Some of the people that recently wrote said:

"I've never sent a letter in response to a newsletter, but I want you to know how much I look forward to receiving your weekly email. It is like getting a letter from home, but this one comes from someone on the other side of the country, someone whom I've never met. And, yes, I am one of those who did vote. Your newsletter (and website) give us so much, such as things that my husband can create when he retires, for it is woodworking that he wishes to do. And I enjoy all the recipes even though I have to convert them all since I am gluten intolerant. (That means no wheat, rye, or barley or anything that might be derived from same.) He is also conservation mindful; in fact we will be building a house this year and hope to utilize many of the newer conservative techniques and materials.
My main reason for writing you is to tell you how much I appreciate your formatting your newsletter. I am able to copy parts I want to keep without having to reformat everything. You'd be surprised at how many letters, even from computer geeks like PC Computing, aren't formatted at all when you try to copy them. After I've copied I then have to go back to Word and separate all the paragraphs, which can be very time consuming. Thanks again and keep your weeklys coming."

"Thank you for all the articles you have sent me. I really like that picture you painted when you were a little boy. It is the one of the cocker spaniel. My husband and I have no grandchildren, but we have 4 grand dogs one of which is a cocker spaniel. Our daughter, Nancy (a good friend of your sister Diane) recently bought the cocker and we just love him. He is blond and so full of energy. He goes with Nancy every work day to the nursing home where Nancy works in the activity section. That dog brings so much joy to the residents at the home. Whenever we have a family gathering at our home 4 dogs are there with us. It is a good thing that my husband and I like dogs!
Thank you again for your wonderful newsletters."

"We served the beer and cheese fondue tonight and it was wonderful. Thank you for the delicious recipe!"

See what wonderful people read the RunnerDuck? We love hearing from you and we hope you continue to enjoy hearing from us.

What's New This Week? Crocus! Yep, here we are in the middle of February, over a month away from the first day of spring and we have Crocus blooming. Not just starting to show some green but in full bloom. An even stranger thing is we have a Fuchsia in a pot that is just sitting in our back yard blooming away. We've been waiting for the leaves to die back on a bunch of plants so we can do our winter pruning but they are all starting to show signs of spring without ever loosing all their leaves. Very strange indeed.
Everybody keeps talking about global warming and we are starting to believe it is happening. I guess we'll just go cut them back and see what happens.
For many of you in the country you are still getting winter and L.A. and Southern California are getting hammered with rain but here in the Great Northwet it looks like spring has sprung.

DigiTalk

While it might be a little late for this Valentine's suggestion it's still a neat thing to do. The more clandestine you can be the better it is. We did this for Christmas at Marilyn's dad's and it was really slick.
The next time you are at someone's house that has a computer, take a digital camera with you. You can also just take a floppy disk along but the important thing is to get a picture of you or your family. I took a picture of Marilyn and her two sisters without her dad knowing about it. I then went onto his computer and made wallpaper out of it so the next time he turned on his computer there were the three girls. It's very simple to do and makes a simple surprise.
Once you have a picture put it in the Windows folder. It should be a .bmp format. On the desktop, with no programs showing, right click and select Properties. Click on the Desktop or Background tab and then the Browse button. When you find the file with the picture name select it and then select apply. The screen should change to a big beautiful picture of you or what ever you selected. Now the next time they turn on the computer they will be pleasantly surprised.

SITE OF THE WEEK

Since we are talking about dental stuff and presidents we must talk about George Washington and his teeth. Did you know that his teeth were made out of wood? Well they weren't! That's been a long time fable that just ain't true. They were made out of hippopotamus ivory and cow's tooth, carved by hand, and held in his mouth with metal springs. Here's a very informative site all about George's teeth, www.americanrevolution.org/dental.html. Here's a picture of George's false teeth from the Virtualology™ Museum of History, www.presidentgeorgewashington.com.

Now that you've seen what poor dental hygiene can do check out the American Dental Associations web site, www.ada.org/public/topics/ncdhm/ for lots of great information on maintaining your teeth. This site is especially good for kids. They have games, posters and educational aids for parents.

If you have a favorite site please send it to us so we may share it with the rest of our readers. Send it to duckmaster@runnerduck.com.

MARILYN'S CORNER

Apple Smile

Sister Susie was over to celebrate her birthday last weekend and was talking about these neat teeth they made in school to discuss dental care. We thought they'd make a pretty fun project.

Here's what you'll need;
  • Apples
  • Miniature Marshmallows
  • Peanut Butter
Cut the apples into wedges about 1/2 in on the side. You can even cut a notch in the middle of one to make it look like an upper lip.
Spread Peanut Butter onto one side of each wedge.
Place the marshmallows along the edge like teeth. You can make them look nice and straight, have missing teeth or make them crooked.

This is a good family project that gives you an opportunity to discuss good dental hygiene. Once you are done discussing the finer points you can eat the lips and teeth. Be sure to brush your teeth afterwards.

We hope you enjoy Marilyn's Corner and look forward to all the fun things she brings you each week. If you have a fun project that would be suitable for our newsletter we'd love to share it with our readers. Just contact marilyn@runnerduck.com and we'll do the rest.

Remember we have all of our past projects archived on our web site at www.runnerduck.com. Just click on the Projects or Kids Only Eggs.

Most children don't like to brush their teeth but this creative book makes the job of teaching them a lot easier. Check out "Brush Your Teeth Please" by clicking on the book cover below.

The Tempos
News and CD of the Week

We thought it would be fun to share a musicians joke with you this week. If you like it let me know because I have a whole bag of great musician jokes.

A woman tells her husband that he is a hopeless drunkard and if he does not go to see a doctor for help she is going to leave him.

The man resists but after relentless nagging he gives in and goes to see a doctor.

The doctor gives him a complete examination and tells the man that he can't find anything wrong with him other than his being an alcoholic and if he does not stop drinking he should not come back to his office for any reason.

The man is at a loss as to what to tell his wife and staggers from saloon to saloon trying to find some strange illness that he could tell her that he has.

Staggering drunkenly on his way home he passes a music store and sees a sign in the window through his drunken stupor and reads out loud, "SYNCOPATION."

That's it! He will tell his wife that he has a bad case of syncopation.

Honey, he tells her I have syncopation. The wife says she never heard of it and goes to look it up in the dictionary and reads, SYNCOPATION: ERRATIC MOVEMENT FROM ONE BAR TO THE NEXT.

Don't forget that The Tempos big swing band is available for hire. If you have a special event that could use the wonderful music of a classic big band be sure to contact thetempos@runnerduck.com.

Now here's one I'll bet you never thought you'd here from a big band drummer. I like country and western music. I'm not really sure if I like country or western but every once in a while I hear something I like. I'm not a regular fan of country but I know some of you probably have your clock radios set to a country station and that's OK. We've got some great buys on all sorts of country and western styles. Just clink on the link below for a huge selection.

CONSERVATION TIP

What do you do when you brush your teeth? Put the tooth paste on your brush, turn on the water, brush your teeth, rinse and turn off the water, right? Wrong! What you should do is put tooth paste on your brush, get it wet, TURN OFF THE WATER, brush our teeth and rinse. Just think that if you brush your teeth three times a day for two minutes each time every person in your house would save about 27 hours of running water. I'm not sure how that converts to gallons but it's got to be a bunch.

If you have a conservation tip please send it to conservation@runnerduck.com and we'll post it in our newsletter.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

The Church Gossip

Jezebel, the church gossip and self-appointed supervisor of the church's morals, kept sticking her nose into other peoples business.

Several residents were unappreciative of her activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.

She made a mistake, however, when she accused George, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his pickup truck parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon.

She commented to George and others that everyone seeing it there would know that he was an alcoholic.

George, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just walked away. He said nothing.

Later that evening, George, quietly parked his pickup in front of Jezebel's house and left it there all night.

We can all thank Wayne P. for this joke and getting the better of Jezebel.

   THIS WEEK'S FREE RECIPE

Chocolate Covered Cherries
Here is something for your sweet tooth! The dentists may not like this recipe but we're sure you will. Even though George didn't really chop down a cherry tree we thought this would be appropriate for Presidents Day also.

  • 3 Tablespoons Butter
  • 3 Tablespoon Corn Syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 1/2 Cups Powdered Sugar, sifted
  • 2 10 ounce jars Maraschino Cherries with stems
  • 12 ounce package Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 3 Tablespoons Shortening

Combine Butter, Corn Syrup, Vanilla and Salt
Add Sugar and beat well. If too thick, knead.
Divide fondant in half.
Roll into two 7" logs.
Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 - 1 1/2 hours.
Cut the logs into 1" pieces and cut each piece into four quarters.
Place into your palm and flatten each piece.
Wrap around a Cherry to cover.
Place on a piece of waxed paper, cover and freeze 30 minutes.
Melt the Chocolate Chips and Shortening together.
Dip the Cherries in the Chocolate, shake off the excess.
Place on waxed paper and chill for 20 minutes.
Store in the refrigerator.

Now post a guard outside the refrigerator because these will go really fast.

Remember, if you have a recipe you'd like to share please send it to marilyn@runnerduck.com.

Every month we post a new recipe on our web page. Be sure and check out the February recipe at the RunnerDuck Kitchen Store.

COOKBOOK
SUGGESTION OF THE WEEK

(click)

Now that we've got our sweet tooth going how about some more desserts and candy? "Room For Dessert" has 110 Recipes for Cakes, Custards, Souffles, Tarts, Pies, Cobblers, Sorbets, Sherbets, Ice Creams, Cookies, Candies, and Cordials.
Here's what one reviewer wrote about this cookbook. "This wonderful book of desserts has quickly become my favorite. I may not even go back to making my staple desserts because it is so fun and rewarding to try the recipes presented here -- an excellent variety of cakes, tarts, pies, cookies, candies, ice cream, souffles, etc. I have experimented with 7 or 8 recipes so far, and every single time I've turned out crowd pleasers. Refined and creative, nice to look at, and wonderfully satisfying to the taste buds, yet for the most part quite easy to make. What a perfect book for the dessert lover/chef!"

Be sure and visit the RunnerDuck Cookbook Store for other great savings on cookbooks and cooking supplies.

PROJECTS

Tooth Fairy Keepsake Box

Some people don't believe in the tooth fairy but if you do here's a great place to put your tooth and for the tooth fairy to put your reward. When the day comes that you're not loosing any more teeth it makes a great little keepsake box.

Click on Picture for All Images

Here's what you'll need;

  • 2" X 3" 3/4" Maple
  • 2" X 3" X 1/4" Maple
  • 1/4" dowel, 7/8" long
  • 1 1/2" X 2 1/2" piece of felt
Cut a 3/4" piece of Maple 2" X 3" for the box.
Cut a 1/4" piece of Maple 2" X 3" for the top.

Mark centers for two holes, centered 1" from each end.
Drill two 1 1/2" holes into the box within 1/8" of the bottom.

Align the top and box pieces and tape them together.
Mark one corner 1/4" from each side for the hinge.
Drill a 1/4" hole through both the top and box within 1/8" of the box bottom.

Cut a 1/4" dowel 7/8" long. Sand it smooth to make it go in the hole a little easier.
Do not hammer the hinge into the top. If you do it could split out the side (speaking from experience). You want it snug but not force fit.
Glue the hinge into the top with a tiny amount of dowel sticking above the top. You'll sand it off later.

After the glue dries, sand the top flat.
Radius the edges of the top using an 1/8" round router bit.
Sand and stain the top and box.
Twist the top hinge into the box. A little wax might make it work easier. You don't want it too loose though.
Cut out a piece of felt to fit into the holes in the box. Glue it into place.

That's it! Now have your toothless child put their teeth in it and wait for the tooth fairy to come do it's thing.
